THE TRADITIONAL WONDER THAT IS SHOU SUGI BAN

Trends in architecture don't always revolve around new ideas. They are often equally inspired by ancient techniques such as Shou Sugi Ban.

Practiced since the 18th century, this Japanese technique of preserving and hardening wood for construction purposes remains relevant in today's architecture because of its timeless benefits and aesthetics.

Remarkable finish

Shou sugi ban adds a deep black tone which no stain or paint can match. In addition to the aesthetic appeal, shou sugi ban products add textural depth and an evolving look—the Japanese term wabi-sabi—a reminder of the transience and imperfection of all things.

Durable and Weathers Over Time

Perhaps the most celebrated feature of shou sugi ban is longevity and minimal maintenance. The process of charring wood creates a carbon layer that strengthens and protects the underlying wood from the elements, making shou sugi ban appropriate for exterior and interior applications. The charred wood is resistant to fire, pests, and moisture damage.

A Win for our Planet

While we appreciate the other quality and aesthetic properties of shou sugi ban, what appeals to us most is how environmentally friendly the manufacturing is. The process doesn't involve the use of toxic chemicals that can upset the environment, which is in line with our company ethos. Additionally, our preferred species is larch, a byproduct of the logging industry which is often left to rot, sent to landfills, or burned. Using this underutilized, but highly durable and stunning, species adds an eco-conscious layer to your project.

WE DO WELL WHEN WE DO GOOD

We operate on the Triple Bottom Line placing equal emphasis on people, planet, and prosperity, while working to minimize our carbon footprint and take the necessary measures to conserve and protect the environment.
