This AIA HSW 1 credit hour CEU will address the benefits of designing with Japanese-style burned wood (called shou sugi ban, yakisugi, yakiita) which has captured the attention of builders, designers, and architects across the globe. This CEU will address its history, how it’s made, how it performs in exterior and interior applications, and how to incorporate it in commercial and residential spaces. From this course, participants will be able to identity what shou sugi ban is (and is not), the benefits of using charred wood, and specify this charred wood for maximum performance.
Learning Objective 1: The history and origin of burnt wood cladding, and how this centuries-old process reflects the importance today of sustainably sourced, natural materials vs. synthetic.
Learning Objective 2: How carefully applying open flame to wood can dramatically increase its longevity through thermal modification and thermal degradation, and embracing a charred finish instead of paint or other potentially unhealthy finishes.
Learning Objective 3: Best uses for shou sugi ban and how to specify it; including specification for a reduced carbon footprint of the structure overall.
Learning Objective 4: How natural wood preservation techniques are beneficial to our health, our environment, and our planet.
