This AIA HSW 1 credit hour CEU will address the benefits of wood and specifically domestic hardwoods as applied in design, construction, as well as their use as a material in paneling and flooring applications. We will also focus on the sustainable and renewable elements of wood as a raw material. Choosing a surface material like wood can be one of the most successful options for positive environmental and social impact. In addition, the health and wellness of the end-user can benefit through both the biophilic benefits and carbon sequestration of this organic material. Wood flooring and paneling are some of the few building products that illustrate the natural beauty of the material itself. This CEU will provide attendees with an understanding of the varied species of wood and what qualities should be considered when selecting a species for flooring or interior siding. These qualities include texture, grain, and color, as well as performance attributes such as dimensional stability, hardness, installation and finishing properties.

Learning Objective 1: Understand the differences between solid vs. engineered wood as well as their benefits.

Learning Objective 2: Discuss the many and varied species of wood and their respective uses, strengths and weaknesses.

Learning Objective 3: Learn about the Janka Scale, what it determines, and how it assists with picking a wood species for your appropriate project.

Learning Objective 4: Discuss the sustainability of wood products, available certifications and wood’s inherent ability to sequester carbon.

Learning Objective 5: Understand how to design and install hardwoods in commercial and residential spaces.

Learning Objective 6: Discuss finishes, patterns, grains, and the aesthetic and biophilic properties of wood.

Learning Objective 7: Learn about wood grading and how wood’s appearance is characterized by “clear” and “character” descriptors.
