As a nod to our Outside & Inside program we’re taking a peek at an exterior/interior material pairing that elevated our client’s goals for the biophilic assimilation of their home to their property.

At their hillside timber frame in the Finger Lakes in NY, our client wanted to have a structure that was as stoic and sturdy as the trees that surrounded their property. With a heavy timber core, the client turned to us to fill the space with materials that expressed the personality of their home and the surrounding environment.

The homeowner says, “I wanted large siding and vertical wood. That was a key element for me. I did not want horizontal siding; I didn't want any kind of vinyl. I really wanted something that reflected the environment.”

That something was our Larch siding, made from sustainably sourced PEFC trees grown in the Pacific Northwest. Our Larch siding in a Fossil finish and chocolatey tone provided the clients with both the sturdiness and nature-centric feel that they desired.

“The wood tones of Larch are really nice,” says Alex Monachino, product acquisitions and sampling expert at Pioneer Millworks. “The lighter tones of Larch allow the pigments in a finish to really stand out – it takes a finish really easily.”

“With younger growth Larch, the knots are small and stable,” explains Monachino. “The tighter knots don’t blow-out when we’re milling which makes it a beautiful material to work with.”

With the curb appeal of the home settled, the homeowner’s attention changed to the aesthetics of the interior. She says, “While we used larch for the exterior, for the interior wood floor, we went up to the showroom, explored various options, and loved the reclaimed teak that Pioneer Millworks had.”

Strong and durable with tight grains and distinctive beauty is our FSC® Chain of Custody Certified reclaimed and ethically sourced Teak.  A sophisticated and versatile material choice, Teak is able to take on the wear and tear of living in the country, perfect for a home in the rolling pastoral landscape of the Finger Lakes region.

Imbibed with natural oils, Teak is highly impermeable to fungus, insects, and rot and is a well-informed choice for kitchen floors and bathrooms because of its durability and resistance to moisture.

It's warm earthy tones crisp knots allow the substrate to work with endless design ideas. In turn, its durability and natural beauty covered all of our client’s desires.

Pioneer Millworks salesperson A.J. Henion adds, “The combination of this siding and flooring would look amazing on any project, but they are at their best when paired with timber elements. New Energy Works did an amazing job on this home with a finish that matches the Fossil color of our Larch siding.”
