Modified to Perfection

“We’re committed to meeting the increasing needs of today’s building industry without disadvantaging future generations,” says Daniel Gudsell, Founding Director at ABODO.
That commitment is shared by Pioneer Millworks where we operate on the simple belief that people, planet, and profit work together to ensure a better future.
Pioneer Millworks and ABODO® are a natural fit for collaboration. Both companies care deeply about sourcing and developing high performing wood products that are safe for people and the environment. Plus, we both really like working with wood!
Jered Slusser sales manager for Pioneer Millworks says, “Ultimately the greatest wood for the planet is one that is grown under the watchful eye of a certifying body like FSC® or a well-minded farmer, wood that uses no red-list chemicals for finish or treatment, wood that will last a long time so that it can sequester carbon during its life and not need replacement, and wood that can be reused or upcycled when its function has been served.”

“ABODO® hits all of our planet, people, and prosperity goals. And it’s really a beautiful material to view and work with,” ends Slusser. “Can’t really get any better than that.”
Crafted for longevity, look, and the environment, our ABODO® Vulcan siding is sustainably harvested from responsibility managed New Zealand forests and crafted to finish in our US mills from FSC®- certified Radiata Pine. 100% recyclable and renewable, and with a stable supply chain, ABODO® is an obvious alternative to: vinyl siding, cement board, and pressure treated lumbers. The thermal modification process results in a reduced resin content giving the wood an enhanced stability and long-term viability, all supported by a 15-year warranty.

Free of Red List chemicals, fungicides, insecticides, and plastics—ABODO® Vulcan siding is the perfect choice for exterior vertical applications. The thermal modification process used in its production results in a stable timber with low moisture content - meaning it won’t warp, cup, or bleed. Vulcan is manufactured with a patented process resulting in an engineered vertical grain orientation that reduces cracking and enables stable weathering long term.
ABODO® Vulcan decking does its best work in horizontal applications. It has the same planet winning features as ABODO Vulcan siding, but is pressure treated with a low VOC organic preservative (OPX) that includes a water repellent and insecticide for termite zones. Unlike most hardwoods, Vulcan decking does not require pre-drilling. It’s easy to work with, cut, and fix, making it a chosen material for professional and DIY builders alike.

What separates ABODO® Vulcan from several other thermally modified products on the market is the conscientious testing processes that occurs both in the lab and long-term field trials. “It’s imperative to establish a thermal modification schedule and prove that it works with real-world field testing,” says Godsell.

It’s easy to say, but harder to prove that a thermally modified wood product will perform under a multitude of conditions and installations. ABODO has done just that through their rigorous quality controls.
ABODO® is not only safe and strong, but it also comes in an abundance of colors and profiles, illustrating that it is diverse enough to work with any design intent, inside or out.
Pioneer Millworks ABODO® Vulcan is available in our five proprietary finishes:
ABODO® Vulcan Black: Our classic ebony that effortlessly emits elegance and sophistication and will assimilate seamlessly into any design intent whether commercial or residential.
ABODO® Vulcan Marmot: An expressive earthen hued brown that brings the organic shadings and internal textures of wood to the forefront.
ABODO® Vulcan Dove: Our achromatic contribution to the Abodo color array, Dove pulls its aesthetic from stone, slate, overcast days, and cloud sailing avians.
ABODO® Vulcan Kodiak: A hearty brown hue imbued with elements of nature’s palette, spotlighting pigments found in bark, tannins, and furs.
ABODO® Vulcan Morel: A neutral creamy hue that contains trace elements of sky and earth culminating in a smooth tone that harkens to the honeycombed shading on the fleshy fruit of a mushroom.
For use in above grade decking, at grade decking, and transition spaces from inside and out:
ABODO® Vulcan Decking is finished with ABODO Protector Oil, the latest in water borne oil technology combining refined plant oils, UV protection, advanced water barrier composition and an enhanced fungicidal package for superior exterior performance, backed by a 15-year warranty.

Gudsell concludes, “if you are buying thermally modified wood from Pioneer Millworks, you will get tested substrates verified by ABODO®. If you have been offered other products, you need to make sure to look at the field test data and confirm there is available evidence that there’s quality controls in place.”
The assurance of tested high-quality material and their performance in real would applications ensures that architects, builders, and end users will be provided a proven and thoughtfully sourced thermally modified wood product from ABODO® and Pioneer Millworks.
