Skyline — Species and Sustainability

Skyline™ is Pioneer Millworks multifaceted and customizable wood cladding system developed from over thirty years of building material experience and sustainable practices. Created with a variety of uses in mind, Skyline™ will work for commercial or residential, interior or exterior, urban or pastoral, and is limited only by your design imagination Just as vital as Skyline’s™ flexibility of use, is that its species are mindfully sourced.

For Skyline’s™ interior applications, the cladding is made from sustainably harvested Forest Stewardship Council® FSC-Certified hardwoods. Working with these paint-grade hardwoods allows the spectrum of finish colors to be the focus, with the species being a medium. The matte sheen of the finish gives shadows a place to play – adding depth and drama to the multi-dimensions.

Whenever we work with a species, the properties of that wood are intentional for the use. As is the case here, this sustainability sourced material’s ultra-smooth texture is what is emphasized when we apply our nine unique opaque colors rather than the natural grain and color variation of the wood.

Available in long lengths, Skyline™ interior’s species is chosen for its ability to blend. Becoming completely transparent to your pattern’s intent. These lengths allow for more uninterrupted lines and easier installation. What we intend to be opaque, is these hardwoods’ sustainability; these species were chosen for their certifications and abundance. They do not have the same kind of forestry pressure on them as other species such as oak, and they are not a manufactured wood.

For Skyline’s™ exterior applications, Accoya® is our species of choice. Accoya is a modified softwood.  Radata pine, a quick-growing tree in sustainably managed forests is then harvested, submerged in a vinegar like mixture, and put under pressure. This process, called acetylation, changes the inherent molecular structure of the wood and prevents the interior cells from absorbing water, giving this softwood the properties of a highly stable hardwood.

This acetylation process gives Accoya other benefits too. It is impervious to rot and remains stable regardless of the climate where it is installed. Insects are deterred from using Accoya as a food source, since most of the wood’s sugars are changed through the process, which lends an additional layer of longevity. Acetylation provides Accoya with incredible performance and longevity and is why it was the perfect medium for Skyline™ in exterior applications.

Accoya is FSC-certified, cradle-to-cradle platinum certified, a warranty for exterior use. “Using science and processes Accoya is designed to last a lifetime and stands behind their product with a fifty-year warranty,” says Pioneer Millworks Operation manager Jonathan Taylor. “That in itself has a lot of value to a lot of clients. We also see clients choosing Accoya because of its incredible stability. You can use this wood vertically in long lengths without warping — it makes it a perfect substrate for Skyline™ exterior.”

While the colors and dimensionality are the features that make Skyline™ special, the choices for species are intentional. What you gain in either case is using a natural, carbon sequestering material, “We wanted to create a dimensional paneling option in wood that allowed designers to really play,” shares Taylor. “Yes, we’re wood people so we were going to use wood in some form to make Skyline™. But which woods were a real conversation. Which species would provide the stability for this tongue & groove slat system to work and be easily installed, while allowing designers to focus on color, dimension, and shadow. And then factor in wanting to use solid wood, with no binding chemicals or plastics, for planet & human health—the decisions are intentional. We hope this gives designers real freedom to play and create some incredible dimensional landscapes in wood.”
