A Tale to Tell in Every Plank

Jered Slusser, Pioneer Millworks sales manager says, "We are excited to change the face of reclaimed wood industry, with the Sunset Collection. Repurposed wood doesn't have to be rustic and rough; it can also have a clean and smooth appearance. We have designed this collection to highlight our rescued oak's dependability, inherent detailing, and specialized finishes that today's consumers demand."

The Sunset Collection’s genesis comes from the rolling green hills and pastoral pastures of Kentucky. Our new reclaimed and engineered flooring line is made with domestic red and white oaks sourced from the iconic four rail fences that reign in America's pasturelands.

This fence wood has been weathered over the course several years and reaches a point where it’s difficult to repaint and refinish. Ranchers then take the fence down and replace the aged planks with new ones. That’s where we come in. We rescue these long-lasting planks, preventing them from landing in landfills and burn piles, and provide them a new lease on life.

Brought to our mill, our proprietary milling techniques preserve the oak’s character, warm tones, and historic markers. This process exposes previously unseen hues and prominent grain patterns, resulting in a more dynamic surface material, unmatched by fresh sawn oak.

These clean 4.5” red and white oak planks form the foundation of Sunset Collection’s sturdy wear layer. Designed for stability with a 9-ply FSC-certified, formaldehyde-free & low-VOC plywood base, our engineered reclaimed wood flooring can be installed over subfloors, concrete pads, radiant heat, or in more humid climates. The plywood base provides a stable platform for the floor and allows it to be installed below grade or directly over concrete or over hydronic heating systems. Because the plies in the plywood are cross laminated any movement in the floor is less noticeable.

“A solid wood floor is typically nailed down to a plywood substrate and that is as simple as it gets with wood flooring installation,” says Pioneer Millworks Sales Manager Jered Slusser. “But you can’t really use a regular solid wood floor in the basement level of a house. There are some applications where you can direct glue a solid floor to a concrete slab but still not below grade. That’s where our engineered flooring shines.”

Sunset collection spotlights the best elements of both solid wood and engineered flooring. You get the story and the history as well as dependability and stability.  Our engineered Sunset Collection not only offers a higher yield per reclaimed board but does so with a cleaner and more consistent surface look. When you choose our engineered Oak for your project, you’re selecting a product that’s not only durable and enriches your space, but also reduces your impact on the planet.

In our world, we have a variety of sustainability impacts, perhaps none dearer to us than wood conservation. Through an awareness of our material usage, we can protect threatened species and extend timber resources. One of the best ways to extend the yield of our reclaimed products is with an engineered layered plank product, a product which is also an eco-friendly and cost-effective option for end-user’s projects.

The Sunset Collection is not just consistent and stable, it's also diverse and multiple. It can work for any design intent, flooring, wall paneling, millwork, shelving – you name it. The single-width planks and regularity of the original fence boards make it a dependable product for any project that you have in mind, and easily customizable for herringbone and chevron installations.

Manufactured at our employee-owned mill in Farmington, New York, the Sunset Collection is finished with an all-natural plant-based UV Cured Hard-Wax Oil in seven proprietary hues. Our UV curing ensures quick drying and easy installation that is effortless to maintain. Most importantly our finishes are durable and safe for people, animals, and the planet.

Sunset Collection is also available with our Commercial Top Coat. Ideal for high-traffic areas, our topcoat adds endurance to floors that require frequent cleanings and take extra wear-tear. Available for all of our UV-cured oil finishes, our Commercial Top Coat combines the depth of oil-based finishes with the easy maintenance of a polyurethane.
