Nature Isn't Black and White
“What’s nice about Pioneer Millwork’s 2024 exterior colors is that they have two darks and two lights that clients can use to play in the space of black or white while maintaining a more muted contrast,” says Kyle Barber, RA and head of New Energy Works East Coast design department.
Pioneer Millworks added four proprietary 2024 color options to its already substantial wood siding and shiplap palette. These new colors were developed by our West coast Mac Sample Lab with the purpose of adding warmer neutrals to our already expansive 20+ color options.
The sophisticated four-finish addition is comprised of our new beige-based colors: Pinecone, Clay, Fawn, and Grove. Our updated palette evokes feelings of serenity and a deeper connection to the environment through the avoidance of high contrasting colors. By integrating a natural color wheel into design, you are able to create a project more cognizant of its relationship with its natural surroundings.
Megan Samuels, Color Development Leader for Pioneer Millworks said, “These new colors to the collection are not super opaque, you’re going to know that there’s wood underneath them. It’s a palette that accentuates the species that it’s on, rather than cover them up. Nothing in nature is a solid uniform color—natural colors have a lot of curvature and sway.”
Just like nature’s best work, our colors are fluid, and change their mood based on light, shade, and the environment they reside in. Designed to highlight the inherent beauty of the wood, our neutral hues work with the personality of the species as opposed to using an unemotional and static cover up. By letting the grains and textures of the wood breathe, the soft contrasting colors and natural feel add a dimensionality and flow to the color options
Helping to accentuate our nature-centric color wheel is three of our responsibility harvested species. Available in sustainably sourced PEFC Larch, FSC® chain-of-custody certified Douglas Fir, and FSC cradle-to-cradle certified Accoya®, all of our new color options are on mediums that are excellent choices for material health. The complexity of the knots and spiraled grains of Larch and Fir allow for detailed expressions of their beauty, while Accoya’s® long term durability and clean grain patterns make it the perfect choice for any outdoor application.
Pioneer Millworks decision to develop this neutral palette came from listening carefully to our clients, and talking with our sales team, marketing, and production folks to understand the movement toward more conventional color and design options. Designers and homeowners alike long for a deeper connection to their environment through their design choices and our new color additions help to convey that feeling.
The Pioneer Millworks color lab believes that with our 2024 siding and shiplap neutrals they have come up with a solution that checks all of the boxes.
The real magic occurs when our colors are used in conjunction with their surroundings, making a project a seamless or divergent partner with its environmental context. “When you’re mixing materials look at the base color of those things. Then you are able to choose the perfect complimentary color for a match or a contrast,” says Barber.
